Shaken, not stirred in Chome

In the morning, we entered two Land Cruisers and began the ascent to Chome. The village is situated in the south Pare mountains, on some 1500 meters altitude. The road to the village is in really poor condition. We were thoroughly shaken, and I wonder if they wouldn’t be better off with a helicopter to get to the village.

A day on the road

Tuesday the 8:th of February was a travelling day. We switched from our Land Rovers to public transport in Arusha, had lunch in Moshi and switched bus again. In the afternoon we got to Elephant motel in Same. We got to meet our tour guide Hamisi’s wife and had dinner at her snack bar, Haza Snacks.

After dinner, we were invited to our guide’s home for a cup of coffee. Then we packed for the next part of the journey: staying with local families in the remote village of Chome in the south Pare mountains.

Ngorongoro crater

About an half hour drive from Karatu lies Ngorongoro crater. It is an old volcano, and on the crater floor you can find heaps of wild animals thriving in the national park, and drinking the water from the lake. So we had high expectations when our Land Rover descended from the crater rim in low gear.

The journey begins

OK, so internet access in Tanzania is less developed then in, say, Ecuador. We’ve tried two different internet cafes in the past weeks, and both times the network was down. So next journey we’ll have to bring our own computer and a satellite telephone :)

Kwa heri Zanzibar

Of course it’s hot today, with the sun beating down from a clear blue sky. It’s just because we’re leaving Zanzibar today. Rudina and Luc left earlier this morning, and we will take the cab at three. We had to check out of our room at 10.30, so we can’t take a shower, thus we’re not bathing either. Booring.

Today’s schedule is cab to the airport via the bank to withdraw some cash. Then jump across the straight to Dar-Es Salaam, and after an hour fly back to Arusha. At 21.30 tonight we’ll rendez-vous with the rest of the group.

So for now we say Kwa heri Zanizbar (Good bye Zanzibar). But we’ll be back in a couple of weeks, and that time we’ll come sailing from Bagamoyo in a dhow. Now that’s gonna be cool. Yep.

Damned, I forgot

Sorry Nike and all you dutch people – I forgot to write in english! Here’s a short recap: We’ve been spending the last week on Zanzibar at a nice hostel called Paje by Night. We’re trying to get a tan before the real safari trip begins on saturday. The days here have been slow and nice, with snorkelling, vespa-riding and sunbathing. Not bad.

I’ll try to remember writing in english from now on. Could be good practice too. :)

Vidare stress i Paje. Not.
